Women and sardines.


On my visit to the 'Museu de Portimão' my favourite exhibition was the production hall or 'The hall of beheading'. It shows the importance of women in the community, in a time where they were not fully appreciated. These women worked long hours in the factory processing the fish, in order for it to be canned. Many of them also slept in the factory, often with their children. The hall itself is still in its original form and really gives you a feeling of what it was like for the people working there, although today there are no workers and no smell of sardines (luckily). The city of Portimão as we know it today only exists due to the sardine production and canning. Many industries were created as a byproduct of the sardine industry, such as boat building and maintainance, which is also still prevalent today.
