The hatchet

When people first moved to the region, houses were very primitive. Their tools were simple wood and metal. This hatchet was brought to the area of modern day Bosco Gurin to split wood. Note the offset handle to protect the user, and heavy metal head to give momentum to the swings. This hatchet in particular could have been used to split wood used by the first families to keep warm during the harsh alpine winter. This is not a proper woodcutting axe. The hatchet cuts slivers for kindling or small branches. This tool was useful for gardening during spring and summer, and could have been used to clear small trees.
